Coffee + Croissants + Crochet

Dear Tribe,

It’s been quite a minute since we’ve sat down with a coffee, some croissants, and a little crochet action, but I’m so happy to be back! I’m going to share with you what’s been going on, but first! Let me give you the deets of what I’m working with while we’re talking.

  • Coffee - Cinnabon with French Vanilla Creamer
  • Croissant - Plan buttery goodness
  • Crochet - Currently working on a new double strand purple and gray scarf with fringe (and I’m geeked about it!!!)

I think there are a lot of times when it’s nice to peek behind the curtain when it comes to businesses. The plan is to share with you the ups and downs of small business life, so let’s just jump right in!

I Did Things My Way

There are many goals that I’m wanting to accomplish with The Urban Countess and I’m the type of person that wants everything done in the “right” way. I know you’re thinking, ‘well what in the hell is the “right” way?’ It used to mean that I would do a bunch of research on what I wanted to accomplish, see how my favorite people went about it, and try and implement it myself. I’m a perfectionist if nothing else (which will surely get you in trouble every time!!), but I figure if I’m going to have a business and one that is a trusted place to buy from, then I want everything to look just so. Not to copy anyone, but just to find a good framework that would work for me to get me where I wanted to be. The thing is..... those frameworks work for other people so well, because they are who they are and they’ve found what works for them. I was so concerned about doing things the “right” way, that I wasn’t allowing myself to do things my way.

Nothing ever really felt like it fit just right. There was something that always felt icky or seemed to go awry. In hindsight, it just makes sense, because I’ve always been someone who needed to do things my way. Kinda like trying to learn math. Math is my arch nemesis. To put it plain, I am where math goes to die! Haha! Or so I thought anyway... Teachers would have you believe that their way was the only way to figure out a problem, when in reality there are three other ways that  you could comprehend much better.

Moral of the story is, learn what has been tried and true, but ultimately you have to do things in your own way and in your own time. Not just in business, but in life too. Even though I’ve been crocheting and selling my merch for many years now, I’m still at square one when it comes to treating my craft like a business and not a hobby. So, yeah I’m still growing and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Have you found yourself having to start back a square one on something in your life that you felt you should be further along with? Share it with me in the comments!

Light & Love,
